Kansas Honor Flight recovering after LeVeta Miller scandal in Great Bend

Kansas Honor Flight will hold a pancake feed fundraiser Sunday, October 11 at the American Legion in Great Bend from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A free will offering will help send Kansas U.S. veterans to Washington D.C. to see their war memorial at no expense to them.

Kansas Honor Flight is recovering after the LeVeta Miller scandal in Great Bend was discovered in 2012. Miller stole over $100,000 from the Central Prairie Honor Flight program in Great Bend while serving as the director. Central Prairie and the Kansas Honor Flight programs are completely different but held the same purpose.

Kansas Honor Flight President Mike VanCampen says it took time to gain everyone’s trust after the fallout.

Miller was found guilty on two counts of theft by deception with the first count receiving 13 months of confinement and the second count adding 12 months. The two sentences are being served consecutively.

At Miller’s trial at the Barton County District Court, VanCampen mentioned he hopes Miller feels ashamed whenever she sees a veteran or the American flag. Miller is ordered to pay over $129,000 in restitution after her release.

VanCampen added he doubts a branch of Kansas Honor Flight will ever be back in Great Bend but still wants veterans in the area to be aware of the service that is available to them.

31 flights of Kansas veterans have went to Washington D.C. through Kansas Honor Flight since the LeVeta Miller case.
