Shamet’s 23 points leads Wichita State to share of MVC title

wsuSPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Landry Shamet scored a career-best 23 points as No. 25 Wichita State clinched at least a share of the Missouri Valley Conference title for a fourth straight season with an 86-67 victory over Missouri State on Saturday.

The title is the fifth in six seasons for the Shockers (27-4, 17-1), who have won 12 straight games and appear well on their way to a sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Shamet finished 9-of-12 shooting, 5 of 8 from 3-point range, while topping his previous best of 20 points — set against South Dakota State in December. Shaq Morris added 20 points for Wichita State, which has won 14 straight games over the Bears (16-15, 7-11), while Conner Frankamp had 14 points.

Dequon Miller led Missouri State with 19 points, while Alize Johnson had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

The Shockers led by as many as 10 points in the first half before Missouri State cut the lead to 50-46 early in the second half. However, Wichita State followed by hitting five of its 11 3-pointers for the game during a 20-8 run that pushed the lead to 70-54 and put the game out of reach.

Shamet hit four of his 3-pointers in the second half for the Shockers, who added to the school record for 3-pointers in a season (274) they set in a win earlier in the week against Evansville.

BIG PICTURE

Wichita State: The Shockers entered The Associated Press poll for the first time in a year this week, and they aren’t going anywhere yet after wins over Evansville on Tuesday and Saturday’s win over Missouri State. The real question for Wichita State is whether its late-season surge is enough for the school — rated 44th in the NCAA’s RPI ratings — to have already secured an NCAA Tournament berth, if it doesn’t win the MVC Tournament next week.

Missouri State: Johnson’s double-double was the 16th of the season for the 6-foot-9 junior. Despite outrebounding Wichita State 33-31, though, the Bears were able to improve on an 80-62 loss to the Shockers in Kansas on Feb. 9, allowing Wichita State to shoot 54.1 percent (33 of 61) in the win.

UP NEXT

Both teams next play at the MVC Tournament in St. Louis from March 2-5.

Kan. Congressman’s Survey On Affordable Care Act May Be Misleading

By BRYAN THOMPSON

Big First Congressman Marshall sent this survey mailer to 50,000 residents of his district.

The Republican majority in Congress is intent on repealing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Freshman Kansas 1st District Rep. Roger Marshall is on board. So he’s gathering input from constituents on how to proceed with repealing and replacing the ACA with what he calls needed “free-market reforms.”

The Great Bend Republican recently mailed a survey to 50,000 households in the Big First.

“The purpose of this survey was to let me have some science behind my feelings that everywhere I go, health care is a big concern,” says Marshall. “Based upon this survey, we’ll see specifically how ‘loud’ of an issue this is for my constituents.”

However, the three-question survey designed by Marshall and his staff is not likely to produce scientifically valid results, according to Mike Walker, of the Docking Institute for Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University. Walker, who designs and analyzes surveys regularly, says the questions could lead people to certain responses.

Walker says the first question is especially problematic. It asks, “Have you seen your healthcare premiums or healthcare costs rise since the passage of the Obama administration’s Affordable Care Act?”

“That should be broken down into maybe three or four questions,” says Walker. “Some of my health care costs may have gone up since the time ACA was passed. That’s a whole ‘nother issue of whether or not the ACA caused them to go up.”

Walker also notes that the survey is accompanied by a letter from Marshall declaring the Affordable Care Act a failure.

“That kind of raises the red flag right there, that it’s really more of a public relations ploy, I think, instead of an actual survey,” Walker says.

The Director of the Docking Institute, Gary Brinker, says it’s impossible to say for sure what Marshall’s motives are, but the survey looks to him like a “push poll”.

“People use these survey tactics when the purpose of the survey is to support an agenda, not to collect valid data on the way people truly feel about an issue,” says Brinker.

Nonetheless, Marshall thinks his survey is worthwhile.

“I’m not an expert on questionnaires like this. I’m open to suggestions, but I think there will be some valuable data out of this when it’s all said and done,” says Marshall.

His staff says thousands of responses have been received already, and more are pouring in daily. The deadline for returning the survey is the end of March. Marshall’s office promises to post the results of the survey through social media, a press release, and their weekly newsletter.

Marshall got an unexpected response to his survey mailer from constituents who showed up at a ribbon-cutting for his new field office in Salina Friday.

“Your first postcard is just Republican crap, to be quite blunt,” said Manhattan resident Christopher Renner. Instead of asking if premiums have gone up under the Affordable Care Act, Renner asserted the survey should have asked whether constituents now have healthcare coverage.

Scene of Thursday shooting in Salina

SALINE COUNTY – Police are investigating a second suspect in connection with a Thursday afternoon shooting in Salina.

Police arrested Maddilynn J. Small, 18, in McPherson early Monday morning on drug charges following a traffic stop, according to Captain Paul Forrester. She also had a gunshot wound to her arm.

Authorities believe Small was a passenger in the maroon Chevy truck that 22-year-old Tyler Reinbold was in when he was shot in the parking lot in the 1500 Block of East Iron.

Witnesses described a white female with blonde hair and wearing dark clothing fleeing the scene.

Capt. Forrester says Small was also shot during the incident. She traveled to Topeka before being picked up in McPherson, according to Forrester.

Friday afternoon, Police picked up 19-year-old Brooklyn McKnight in connection with the shooting.

Authorities believe McKnight, Reinbold and Small were all passengers in the vehicle when McKnight shot Reinbold twice, once in the stomach and once in the calf.

Reinbold was originally hospitalized in critical condition. He recovered enough to provide police with information on McKnight and Small.

McKnight faces attempted first-degree murder charges for the shooting.

Police are also looking for a fourth suspect, according to Forrester.

Marshall pleased with Trump’s Executive order on EPA, WOTUS

WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Congressman Roger Marshall released the following statement regarding President Trump’s executive order asking the EPA to repeal the Waters of the U.S. rule:

“President Trump’s executive order calling for the EPA to repeal the detrimental Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule is a promise delivered for Kansas farmers and ranchers.

Members of our state’s agriculture community spent the better part of the last decade trying to operate under the burdensome and uninformed regulations imposed by the Obama administration. Today’s executive order is an exciting step in rolling back these harmful policies.

We commend the Trump Administration’s bold action.

The Latest: Trump condemns Kansas sports-bar shooting in speech

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — The Latest on a deadly shooting at a Kansas bar that some witnesses said was racially motivated (all times local):

Trump during Tuesday’s message to a joint session of congress

8:20 p.m.

President Donald Trump opened his address to a joint session of Congress by condemning the recent threats against Jewish community centers and a fatal shooting in Kansas being investigated as a hate crime.

Trump on Tuesday said that “while we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms.”

The president had received criticism from some civil rights groups who accused him of being slow in denouncing the violent acts. He had yet to discuss the killing of Srinivas Kuchibhotla, one of two Indian men shot inside a bar in Olathe, Kansas.
There have also been dozens of threats against Jewish community centers — and vandalism in Jewish cemeteries

2:05 p.m.

The FBI is confirming for the first time that it is investigating as a hate crime last week’s Kansas bar shooting that killed an Indian man and wounded another.

The FBI said in a statement Tuesday that it bases that probe on “the initial investigative activity” involving the Feb. 22 attack at Austins Bar and Grill in Olathe, Kansas.

The FBI is declining additional comment, citing the investigation.

Witnesses to the shooting said 51-year-old suspect Adam Purinton yelled “get out of my country” at 32-year-olds Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani before opening fire.

Kuchibhotla was killed and Madasani was wounded. Both were working as engineers for GPS device-maker Garmin.

Another bar patron who tried to intervene also was wounded.

Purinton is charged with murder and attempted murder.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — An aide says Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer plan to meet with India’s consul general over a bar shooting that left an Indian engineer dead and another wounded.

Brownback spokeswoman Melika Willoughby said the meeting will take place later this week. She said Brownback and Colyer plan to express their condolences and express their support for the Indian community.

Willoughby did not provide further details about the meeting in an email Monday evening.

OLNEY, England (AP) — A trans-Atlantic pancake race has taken a battering due to a technological glitch.

Apron-clad women carrying and flipping pancakes in their pans have run through the English town of Olney in an annual Shrove Tuesday race that pits the community against the town of Liberal, Kansas.

But the timer in Olney failed, so no official time was recorded for winner Kaia Larkas and there will be no showdown with Liberal.

The Liberal leg of the race was won by Maggie Lapinski, of Liberal, in 61.06 seconds.

According to legend, the Olney race started in 1445 when a harried housewife arrived at church still clutching her frying pan with a pancake in it. Liberal challenged Olney in 1950 after seeing photos of the race in a magazine.

UPDATE: Ammonia leak forces evacuations, closes school in Salina

Location of the Ammonia leak in Saline County-google map

SALINE COUNTY-The ammonia leak in Salina has stabilized and it no longer poses a threat to citizens that live in the area and business operations in that area, according to a late afternoon media release from Saline County Emergency Management. Most residents were allowed to return to their homes.

No injuries were reported.

Cause of the leak is still under investigation.

SALINA, Kan. (AP) — Investigators are looking for the cause of an anhydrous ammonia leak at the Schwan’s plant in Salina.

The leak was discovered at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday and contained about three hours later. Employees were evacuated from the facility. Two workers received medical treatment as a “precaution.”

Saline County officials say a voluntary evacuation was issued for people living west of the facility.

Schilling Elementary in Salina is closed because of the leak, but no other schools are affected.

Schwan spokesman Chuck Blomberg says ammonia is used in production at the plant as a refrigerant for frozen food. The plant primarily makes pizzas.

He says Schwan does not know yet the impact of the leak on plant operations.

—————-

SALINE COUNTY -Emergency crews in Salina are dealing with a sizable ammonia leak at the Tony’s Pizza Factory.

Just after 2:30 a.m., crews were sent to the plant at Schilling and Centennial Road after report of the leak, according to Troy Long with the Salina Fire Department

Ammonia covered an area on the roof that measured 25′ x 25′ and was 6-inches thick in a frozen state. The ammonia is expected to convert to a gas form when the sun comes up later in the morning.

The Code Red emergency phone system was used to alert neighborhoods in the area of the leak and they were given the option of staying inside their homes or voluntary evacuation.

Some area residents did choose to leave.

Long stressed this is not an imminent danger situation, but plans for a shelter and transportation of people from the area was being prepared if needed.

The Salina Fire Department asked employees of Eldorado Bus and the Fed Ex drop off store not to report to work Wednesday.

The fire department is requesting USD 305 to keep Schilling Elementary School closed Wednesday.

Long said shutting down the leak is a slow process.

The Salina Fire Department has called one shift back for additional staff.

There have been no injuries.

wsuST. LOUIS (AP) — Shaquille Morris scored 21 points, Conner Frankamp added 18 and No. 21 Wichita State beat Missouri State 78-63 on Saturday in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Markis McDuffie added 15 points for the second-seeded Shockers (29-4), who advanced to the championship game for the fourth time in eight seasons. They will play top-seeded Illinois State for the title on Sunday.

Wichita State last won the MVC Tournament in 2014.

Sixth-seeded Missouri State (17-15), which upset No. 3 seed Northern Iowa in the quarterfinals, got 20 points from Jarred Dixon and 13 from Alize Johnson.

Wichita State beat Missouri State by 19 points a week earlier and has won 15 straight meetings with the Bears. Missouri State last beat Wichita State in 2011.

The Shockers followed up a slow start in the quarterfinals Friday with another one Saturday, missing nine of their first 10 field-goal attempts as Missouri State scored the first nine points of the game and led 12-2.

Wichita State led by as many as 10 in the first half, but Missouri State used a 7-0 run over the final 2:21 to trim the margin to 37-34.

The Shockers pulled away in the second half behind Morris, who had 16 points and six rebounds in 13 minutes. Wichita State, which eventually opened an 18-point bulge, made all 14 of its free throws after halftime.

BIG PICTURE

The Shockers improved to 4-4 in MVC Tournament semifinal games under coach Gregg Marshall. Wichita State is 1-2 in MVC championship games during that span.

UP NEXT

Wichita State will meet fellow Missouri Valley Conference co-champion Illinois State (27-5) in the championship game. The teams split two regular-season matchups, and both went 17-1 in conference play. Illinois State got the No. 1 seed based on RPI as the tiebreaker.

No. 21 Wichita State beats Illinois State to win MVC tourney

wsuST. LOUIS (AP) — No. 21 Wichita State left no doubt as to whom the top team in the Missouri Valley Conference was.

Conner Frankamp scored a career-high 19 points and Markis McDuffie added 16 as No. 21 Wichita State beat Illinois State 71-51 in the MVC Tournament championship game Sunday, earning an automatic NCAA Tournament berth.

“I thought we played very well against a very good team,” Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall said. “I thought it was a very thorough performance. We defended well. We made our free throws. We got the ball inside. We rebounded well. We shot it well. So that results in a 20-point win and that’s hard to do against that team.”

The teams had split their regular-season series and shared the conference championship, with Illinois State earning the top seed over Wichita State based on RPI.

The Shockers (30-4) have won 15 straight games since losing at Illinois State on Jan. 14. The Redbirds (27-6) had won eight straight games since losing at Wichita State on Feb. 4.

“Our loss at Illinois State really woke us up,” said Frankamp, who was named the tournament’s most outstanding player after scoring 37 points in the final two games. “We got right back to work after that and changed a few things and it’s really helped us. We’ll continue to work and hopefully make a run in the tournament.”

Landry Shamet added 14 points for Wichita State. Paris Lee, the MVC’s player of the year, led Illinois State with 18 points on 7-of-21 shooting, while MiKyle McIntosh scored 16.

Illinois State shot a season-low 29.3 percent from the field (17 of 58).

“We picked a bad day to have a bad day, especially shooting the ball,” Illinois State coach Dan Muller said. “Certainly part of it was their defense, but part of it was us. . We just got beat by a good team today. They played better than us.”

After sluggish starts the past two games, Wichita State opened this one with a 10-2 run that included 3-pointers from Frankamp and Shamet.

The Shockers, who got 13 points from Frankamp in the opening half, never trailed in the first 20 minutes, led by as many as 11 points and held a 33-25 advantage at halftime.

Wichita State pulled away in the second half, led by McDuffie and Shamet. The Shockers led by as many 23 points after halftime and sealed the victory at the free-throw line, sinking 21 of 31 attempts in the second half.

BIG PICTURE

With the win, Wichita State reached the 30-win mark for the fourth time in five seasons and solidified its standing as one of the top 25 teams in the nation heading into the NCAA Tournament.

Illinois State has lost five straight tournament championship games and fell to 4-8 in title games. The Redbirds’ last MVC Tournament championship was in 1998.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Wichita State’s dominant three wins in the MVC Tournament — by 26, 15 and 20 points — could move the Shockers up a few spots in the next poll.

FRESHMAN WATCH

Shamet, the lone freshman in Wichita State’s starting lineup, admitted to having some nerves at the start of the MVC Tournament. But after scoring 12 points in the first two games combined, he had 14 points including three 3-pointers against Illinois State. The performance helped land Shamet on the all-tournament team.

UP NEXT

Wichita State has secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive season.

Illinois State will have to wait to see if it receives an invitation to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998.

Barton student Zack Steffen

Barton student Zack Steffen

Story and phto by Brandon Steinert-gobarton.com

Barton student Zack Steffen, sophomore of Great Bend, managed to acquire 32 credit-hours of college coursework before graduating high school through dual credit.

He then began pursuit of an associate of science degree with an emphasis in engineering and will graduate in May.

He plans to attend Wichita State University in the fall to study Biomedical Engineering, which he hopes will prepare him to contribute to the field of prosthetics and the use of technology in medicine.

Not only will the transfer happen seamlessly, he has already qualified for a $6,000 academic transfer scholarship thanks in large part to the guidance of Barton advisor Karen Kratzer, who helped him work with WSU on selecting the appropriate classes to prepare him for the university’s program.

“She was a big help,” he said. “She made it all possible, as well as Angie Maddy and all my instructors.”

Steffen said the quality of the coursework was top notch and had nothing but praise for Barton’s faculty. He said they made it possible for him to take heavy course loads. In the spring 2017 semester he is taking Engineering Physics II, Speech, Anthropology and Calculus III.

The sophomore from Great Bend offered his testimonial at the Barton Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday, which included discussion of one of its nine overarching goals, known as ENDs. This month’s focus was on “Academic Advancement,” which deals primarily with ensuring students are able to transfer successfully if that is their intent.

This END states, “Students desiring academic advancement will be prepared for successful transfer to other colleges and universities.” Within that statement are four supporting goals: “Students will have the academic prerequisites sufficient for successful transfer. Students will have appropriate knowledge of transfer requirements. Students will have adequate preparation to be successful after transfer to other colleges or universities. Students will be able to obtain Bachelor’s and advanced degrees through studies sponsored by Barton Community College.”

Highlights from the END report include:

323 students pursued transfer (15-16 academic year)
Barton has 56 trained advisors
Advisors serve more than 3,000 degree-seeking students

Duffy pitches gem as Royals beat Angels 7-1

royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals’ starting rotation continues to be a strength.

Danny Duffy allowed three hits over seven innings and Mike Moustakas hit a two-run homer as the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-1 Friday night.

Duffy’s performance came one night after Jason Vargas threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings to beat Oakland. The Royals’ rotation has an American League-best 2.70 ERA after 10 games.

“I’m just trying to follow Vargy, I guess,” Duffy said. “He did a great job. They say hitting is contagious, pitching is too.”

Duffy (2-0) gave up a run on Mike Trout’s single in the first, but retired 15 of the last 16 batters he faced. He allowed just one hit after the first, striking out six and walking two while lowering his earned run average to 1.80 and improving to 8-0 in his past 16 Kauffman Stadium starts.

“It took him an inning to get settled in,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “He just threw the ball extremely well, good fastball, really good changeup and some really good sliders. He did a great job of keeping those guys off balance.”

Salvador Perez also homered, his fifth of the season, and drove in two runs for Kansas City.

Moustakas homered in the first and the Royals added a run in the second when Paulo Orlando scored on a wild pitch by JC Ramirez (2-1).

Kansas City scored twice in the third. Moustakas led off with a walk, advanced to third on Lorenzo Cain’s double and scored on Eric Hosmer’s grounder. Cain scored on Perez’s sacrifice fly.

Ramirez, making his first start in the majors after 111 relief appearances, was pulled after 75 pitches and five innings, both career highs. His last start was Sept. 2, 2011, for Double-A Reading.

“I was kind of excited to start, and then I got those first two innings and I said `oooh,” Ramirez said. “I thought `I can do this.’ They were just being aggressive to me.”

Ramirez, who retired the final nine batters he faced, allowed five runs and four hits, two walks, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.

“I think those guys jumped him out of the gate,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “He threw three pitches and he was down two to one.”

The Royals upped their lead on a Perez’s homer off Deolis Guerra in the sixth. Cain, who had his third straight multi-hit game, scored in the eighth when Perez grounded into a double play.

ROSTER MOVE

The Angels purchased the contract of Guerra from Triple-A Salt Lake, where he worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings. RHP Daniel Wright, who threw four innings Thursday, was optioned to the Bees.

MOYLAN’S NO HITTER ENDS

Royals RHP Peter Moylan yielded a two-out single to Albert Pujols in the ninth, ending his streak of 9 2/3 hitless innings. It was the first hit he had allowed since Sept. 23 over 11 appearances. The Angels loaded the bases after Pujols’ single, but failed to score. He has not allowed an earned run in his past 12 outings, covering 11 innings.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Angels: LHP Andrew Heaney (rehabbing from elbow surgery) was moved to the 60-day disabled list to make roster space for Guerra.

UP NEXT

Angels: RHP Matt Shoemaker has allowed nine runs on nine hits, including three home runs, five walks and a hit batter in 9 1/3 innings in his first two starts.

Royals: RHP Nate Karns is making his first Kauffman Stadium start with the Royals after being acquired in a January trade with Seattle.

SEDGWICK COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities in Sedgwick County are investigating two teen suspects on theft charges after a crash into building.

Wichita police say two teens have been arrested after one of them crashed a stolen car into a building early Sunday morning.

Just after 3 a.m. Sunday, police identified a possible stolen Ford Taurus at near the intersection of Hillside and Lincoln in Wichita, according to Sgt. Nikki Woodrow during Monday’s online media briefing.

The vehicle was reported stolen from Haysville.

Police attempted to stop the car at the intersection of Chautauqua and Riviera. After a brief chase, the northbound Ford driven by a 16-year-old crashed into a building in a strip mall in the 900 Block of George Washington Boulevard.

The teen ran from the scene. He and a 17-year-old passenger were quickly arrested.

The driver was booked for alleged auto theft, destruction of property, possession of drug paraphernalia, hit-and-run, and other traffic-related charges.

The passenger was booked for alleged possession, consumption of alcohol by a minor and possession of drug paraphernalia.

There were no injuries.
